A local bank account makes life in Paraguay far easier — paying rent and utilities, receiving income, and building a financial footprint in the country. The good news: as a resident it's very doable. Here's how it works, what you'll need, and the realistic options if you're just arriving.

Residency first

The single most important thing to know: most Paraguayan banks want you to be a resident with a cédula (the national ID) before they'll open a full personal account. That's why banking is part of the same journey as getting residency — once your cédula is in hand, the door opens. If you're a company, an account can follow your RUC (tax) registration.

Documents you'll typically need

Banks apply standard know-your-customer checks, so being able to clearly show where your money comes from speeds everything up.

The step-by-step process

What about before you have residency?

If you haven't completed residency yet, full personal banking is usually limited. In the meantime many newcomers manage with international options — multi-currency accounts and cards (the kind used by frequent travellers) — and switch to a local account once the cédula arrives. We'll tell you honestly what's realistic at each stage rather than over-promising.
